He spent his younger years in Lake Forest, Illinois before relocating to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and then to Scottsdale, Arizona where he completed his schooling.

The Baltimore Orioles chose Merrill in the 37th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. However, at the time, he chose not to sign a contract.

Merrill played for the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2010.
