In the late 1970s, Mulray joined the newly formed Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s alternative rock station 2JJ in Sydney, which later became Triple J. He garnered a significant following during his time there.
In 1982, he was recruited by Triple M, where he served as the breakfast host and achieved remarkable success, raising the ratings to share from 2.6 per cent to 18 per cent.
Mulray’s fictional characters, such as Madam Zenda and Jack Africa, became fan favourites, showcasing his comedic prowess.
After leaving Triple M, Mulray briefly worked in the PM drive time slot on 2SM with Peter FitzSimons before moving to Sydney radio station 2WS.
However, he reached a different level of success than at Triple M. Industry analysts ranked his breakfast show the third-best Australian metro FM breakfast show of all time in 2014.
Controversy
Mulray’s career was subject to controversy. In 1992, he hosted the spin-off show “Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos,” which was swiftly pulled from broadcast by Nine Network owner Kerry Packer after just one episode.
Mulray was fired and banned from the network for life. However, he returned in 2002 to participate in a special event and as a judge on the series “StarStruck.”
